Las Cuevas Beach is easily my top choice for an beach engagement photos in Trinidad. If you’ve ever driven along the North Coast Road and caught a glimpse of it through the trees, you already know why. The deep greens, the dramatic hills, the stretch of sand that seems to go on forever. It’s the kind of location that does half the work for you before the camera even comes out.
If you’re planning an engagement session and you want photos that look like they belong in a travel magazine, this is where you want to be.
Sunrise or sunset will deliver some of the best light you’ve ever seen at Las Cuevas. Always aim to shoot one hour before sunset to catch golden hour, that warm, flattering light that makes everything glow. Keep in mind that sunset times shift throughout the year in Trinidad, so do your research before you book your session.
One of my favourite free tools for this is Shademap — it lets you track exactly where the sun will be at any time of year so there are no surprises on the day.
Las Cuevas used to be the quieter alternative to Maracas, but in recent years it has gotten significantly busier. If you’re camera shy or you want a more private, intimate session, book on a weekday. You’ll have far more space to breathe and far fewer eyes on you.
The good news is that Las Cuevas stretches for nearly a mile. The further down you walk, the more privacy you’ll find.
There are also two entrances to the beach worth knowing about:
Las Cuevas is defined by its deep, lush greens. Against that backdrop, all white is your best friend. Clean, simple, and effortlessly beautiful — it photographs like a dream here.
Avoid busy patterns or loud colours. The scenery is already doing a lot and you want the focus to stay on you and your partner, not competing with the background. Keep your outfits simple and let the location do what it does best.
One note on the water…Trinidad’s beaches tend to run green rather than crystal blue. If you were hoping for that turquoise Caribbean water in your photos, Tobago is the move. But for dramatic, lush, editorial engagement photos? Las Cuevas is unmatched.
Sandflies are real. Las Cuevas is notorious for them, especially around dusk — which is exactly when you’ll want to be shooting. Bug spray is not optional. Apply it before you arrive and bring it with you.
There is no food at the beach beyond a small bar where you can grab refreshments. Plan to eat before you arrive. If you need to fuel up on the way, a 20-minute drive down the road will bring you to Maracas where you can grab bake and shark. For something more substantial, take a drive into Santa Cruz for lobster roti. Either way, don’t show up hungry — you want to feel good on the day.
Las Cuevas is one of those locations that never gets old for me as a photographer. Every session there feels different depending on the light, the season, and the couple and that’s exactly what makes it special.
If you’re planning an engagement session in Trinidad and you want photos that genuinely reflect who you are and where you’re from, I’d love to be your photographer.
